Box Blade Land Leveler: Sizes, Uses and How to Level Ground

2026年10月20日19 views

A box blade land leveler is one of the simplest and most useful implements for a small or compact tractor. It levels rough fields, fills ruts and low spots, spreads soil and gravel, and maintains farm tracks – all with one three-point mounted tool. This guide explains how a box blade works, how to choose the right width for your tractor, and how to get a smooth, level finish.

What Is a Box Blade Land Leveler?

A box blade is a rectangular steel box open at the front and bottom. A cutting blade runs across the bottom, and side plates hold the soil inside the box so it is carried and spread rather than pushed off to one side. In front of the blade, a row of scarifier shanks (rippers) can be lowered to break up compacted ground before the blade levels it.

The SH box-blade land levelers are three-point mounted, with scarifier shanks and an adjustable blade, in working widths from 1220 to 2135 mm for 18–40 hp tractors.

What Can a Box Blade Do?

  • Level fields: cut high spots and fill low spots so water spreads evenly and seed is placed at a uniform depth.
  • Repair farm roads: rip up potholed tracks with the shanks, then re-level and re-crown them.
  • Spread material: move and spread topsoil, sand, gravel or manure evenly.
  • Prepare sites: level the ground for sheds, yards, greenhouses and animal pens.
  • Backfill: push soil back into trenches after laying pipes or cables.

Box Blade Sizes and Tractor Power

Model Working width Overall depth Tractor power Weight
LSH-4 1220 mm 547 mm 18–25 hp 135 kg
LSH-5 1530 mm 547 mm 20–25 hp 170 kg
LSH-6 1830 mm 547 mm 25–40 hp 206 kg
LSH-7 2135 mm 547 mm 30–40 hp 229 kg

How to choose the width

A practical rule is to pick a blade at least as wide as the tractor’s rear tyres, so the wheels do not run over and re-mark the levelled surface. Then check the power range in the table: a full box of moist soil is heavy, and a blade that is too wide for the tractor will stall it or spin the wheels. For a 20–25 hp compact tractor, the LSH-4 or LSH-5 is the usual choice; 25–40 hp tractors handle the LSH-6, and 30–40 hp tractors the full 2135 mm LSH-7. How to Use a Box Blade for a Level Finish

  1. Set the top link: adjust it so the blade sits flat on the ground. Shortening the top link tilts the blade forward to cut more aggressively; lengthening it lets the blade float and smooth.
  2. Rip first on hard ground: lower the scarifier shanks and make one or two passes to loosen compacted soil or old road surfaces.
  3. Raise the shanks and level: drive slowly with the blade just touching the soil. Let the box fill, then carry the soil into the low areas.
  4. Work in overlapping passes: go back and forth, then finish across the first direction to remove small ridges.
  5. Finish in reverse if needed: backing up with the blade lowered gives a smooth back-dragged surface.

Box Blade vs Other Tillage Tools

A box blade does not replace primary tillage. On cropland, plough or disc first and level afterwards: a plough or disc harrow breaks and turns the soil, and the box blade then removes the ridges and dead furrows. On compacted subsoil, a subsoiler works deeper than the scarifier shanks can reach. Good levelling is part of the efficient field operations described in the FAO’s guidance on sustainable agricultural mechanization.

FAQ

What size box blade for a 25 hp tractor?

The LSH-4 (1220 mm) or LSH-5 (1530 mm). The LSH-6 starts at 25 hp but works best with more power.

What are the shanks for?

The scarifier shanks break up hard ground and old road surfaces so the blade can cut and level evenly. Raise them for final smoothing.

Is a box blade good for farm roads?

Yes. Rip the surface, level it, then crown the centre slightly so rain runs off to the sides.

Does it fit a Category 1 hitch?

All SH box blades are three-point mounted for 18–40 hp tractors. Tell us your tractor model and we will confirm the hitch.
