Corn Thresher Guide: Capacity, Engine vs PTO and Shelling Tips
Shelling corn by hand is one of the slowest jobs after harvest. A corn thresher (also called a maize sheller) strips kernels from dry cobs in seconds, separates the grain from the cobs and husk, and delivers clean corn ready for drying, bagging or sale. This guide compares the SH 5TY corn thresher models, explains engine-driven versus PTO-driven machines, and shows how to get the best threshing rate with minimal broken grain.
How Does a Corn Thresher Work?
Dry cobs are fed into a hopper. Inside the drum, a rotating rotor with beaters rubs and strikes the cobs against a concave screen. Kernels are knocked off and fall through the screen, while the empty cobs are pushed out of the other end. A fan blows light material – husk pieces and dust – away from the clean grain. A good machine does this without cracking the kernels, because broken corn stores poorly and sells for less.

SH Corn Thresher Models
| Model | Threshing rate | Breakage rate | Capacity | Power |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5TY-2.5 | ≥98% | ≤2% | 1500–2000 kg/h | 10–12 hp |
| 5TY-850 | ≥98% | ≤2% | 2500–4500 kg/h | 15 hp |
| 5TY-850T | ≥98% | ≤2% | 2500–4500 kg/h | ≤60 hp tractor (PTO) |
All three models reach a threshing rate of at least 98% with a breakage rate of 2% or less.
Engine-Driven or PTO-Driven?
Engine-driven (5TY-2.5, 5TY-850): the thresher is powered by its own diesel engine. It works anywhere – in the yard, at the field edge or moved between villages – without tying up a tractor. This is the most popular choice for contract shelling services and farms without a tractor.
PTO-driven (5TY-850T): the thresher is driven from the tractor PTO, for tractors up to 60 hp. If you already own a tractor, you avoid buying and maintaining a second engine, and the tractor can tow the machine between sites. See our tractors page for suitable models.
Which capacity do you need?
Estimate the corn you must shell each day and how many hours you will run. A family farm or small group usually finds the 1500–2000 kg/h 5TY-2.5 enough. Grain traders, cooperatives and contract shellers who move from farm to farm benefit from the 2500–4500 kg/h of the 5TY-850 or 5TY-850T.

Tips for Clean, Fast Shelling
- Dry the cobs first: damp cobs shell poorly and kernels tear. Shell after the crop has dried in the field or crib.
- Feed evenly: keep a steady flow into the hopper. Overloading slows the drum and raises losses; underfeeding wastes time.
- Keep the speed right: run the engine or PTO at the rated speed. Too fast cracks grain; too slow leaves kernels on the cob.
- Check the cobs coming out: if kernels remain, adjust feeding or speed before carrying on.
- Grease and tighten: check bearings, belts and bolts daily during the season.
Other Post-Harvest Machines
For rice, wheat and other small grains, the compact 5TD grain threshers range from the 8 hp 5TD-50 (500–800 kg/h) to the 20 hp 5TD-125 (1200–1500 kg/h). If you sell or store corn with the husk removed, the 5TY-4 corn peeler husks 6000–8000 cobs per hour with a 2.2 kW motor. All are on our harvesters and threshers page, together with walking-tractor reapers and mini combine harvesters.
Reducing post-harvest losses is a key part of the FAO’s work on sustainable agricultural mechanization, and shelling machinery is often the first step for smallholders.

FAQ
What is the capacity of a corn thresher?
SH models handle 1500–2000 kg/h (5TY-2.5) or 2500–4500 kg/h (5TY-850 and 5TY-850T).
Will it break the corn?
Breakage rate is 2% or less when cobs are dry and the machine runs at rated speed.
Can a corn thresher shell other crops?
The 5TY machines are designed for corn. For rice and wheat choose a 5TD grain thresher.
What tractor runs the 5TY-850T?
A tractor of up to 60 hp with a PTO drives the 5TY-850T.
