Diesel Walking Tractor Guide: Water vs Condenser Cooling, Start and Chassis (8–25 HP)
A diesel walking tractor is only as good as the engine and chassis under it. Many buyers compare only horsepower, then find the cooling system does not suit their water supply or the chassis is too light for their plough. This guide explains the engine options on our 8–25 HP models so you can order the right machine the first time.

How a Diesel Walking Tractor Is Built
A two-wheel tractor has a single-cylinder diesel engine at the front, a gearbox and axle (the chassis) in the middle, and long handlebars for the operator walking behind. A belt carries power from the engine to the gearbox, which drives the wheels and implements such as a rotary tiller.
On our walking tractors, three choices decide how the machine works for you:
- Engine power – from 8 HP up to 25 HP.
- Chassis – the 101, 121 or 151 gearbox and axle.
- Cooling and starting – water-cooled or condenser-cooled, hand-crank or electric start.
Engine and Chassis Combinations: Full Model Table
The model name gives engine and chassis: SH1105+151 is an 18 HP engine on the 151 chassis.
| Model | Engine power (hp) | Chassis | Cooling | Battery in electric-start kit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SH180+101 | 8 | 101 | Water or condenser | 60A |
| SH190/192+101 | 10/11 | 101 | Water or condenser | 60A |
| SH195/196+101 | 12/13 | 101 | Water or condenser | 60A |
| SH1100+121 | 15 | 121 | Water or condenser | 60A |
| SH1100+151 | 15 | 151 | Water or condenser | 80A |
| SH1105+121 | 18 | 121 | Water or condenser | 60A |
| SH1105+151 | 18 | 151 | Water or condenser | 80A |
| SH1110/1115+151 | 20/22 | 151 | Water or condenser | 80A |
| SH25+151 | 25 | 151 | Water only | 80A |
Water-cooled engines come with hand-crank or electric start; condenser-cooled engines come with electric start. The kit is a starter motor, battery and battery box with an external generator. The 25 HP model is water-cooled only.
Water Cooled vs Condenser Cooled Walking Tractor
A water cooled walking tractor uses a water tank on top of the engine. Heat from the cylinder warms the water, and the operator tops it up as it evaporates. It is simple, easy to repair in any village workshop and suits long working days.

A condenser cooled walking tractor also uses water, but a condenser on top of the engine turns the steam back into water so much less is lost. This suits dry regions where water must be carried to the field. On our range it always comes with electric start.
Quick rule: plenty of water, choose water-cooled; limited water, choose condenser-cooled.
Hand-Crank or Electric Start Walking Tractor?
Hand-crank starting needs no battery, so there is nothing to go flat during the off-season and nothing to replace. It does need some strength, especially with a larger engine.
An electric start walking tractor starts with a key or button. It is easier for older operators, rental fleets and 20–25 HP engines that are hard to crank. Our kit includes the starter motor, a 60A battery on 101 and 121 models or an 80A battery on 151 models, and a battery box.
Matching HP and Chassis to Farm Size and Soil
Use the job, not only the land size, to decide:
- 8–13 HP on the 101 chassis – gardens, greenhouses and vegetable beds below about 1 hectare. Light and easy to turn.
- 15–18 HP on the 121 chassis – family farms of roughly 1–3 hectares with medium soil, using a rotary tiller, ridger or planter.
- 15–25 HP on the 151 walking tractor chassis – heavy clay, paddy fields, deep ploughing and haulage. The 151 walking tractor can be supplied with a rotary tiller and uses its own 151-specific double-share plough.

If you are still unsure, our selection assistant lists the models that fit your needs. For a four-wheel option above 25 HP, see our tractors.
Implements and Spare Parts to Order Together
Most buyers order two or three implements so one engine works all season, such as a rotary tiller, a share or disc plough, a ridger, corn or wheat planters, a two-disc mower and a trailer with a 2 m × 1 m × 0.3 m box. See the full list in our guide to walking tractor attachments.

Dealers should stock fast-moving parts with the first order: drive belts, filters, tillage blades and plough shares. Daily care is simple – check oil and coolant, clean the air filter in dusty fields, keep belts tight and drain the water tank before frost.
Common Buying Mistakes
- Buying on horsepower alone. An 18 HP engine on a light chassis is not the same as 18 HP on the 151. Match the chassis to the heaviest job.
- Ignoring local water. A water-cooled engine in a dry area means daily water hauling.
- Choosing electric start without battery support. If batteries are hard to buy or charge locally, order hand-crank or keep a spare.
- Forgetting fit. Paddy wheels with a 151 rotary tiller need a connecting frame.

Why Buy Direct from the Factory
We build our two-wheel tractors in our own factory in China and sell direct to dealers, cooperatives and farmers. You get SH labelling or OEM options for your own brand. For export, a large wooden crate (1400 × 1150 × 1150 mm) holds a walking tractor together with its implements, and we ship by sea, rail and air – see export & shipping.
Affordable small machines are often the first step in farm mechanization. The FAO’s work on sustainable agricultural mechanization shows how they help smallholders save labour and plant on time.

FAQ
Is a water cooled walking tractor better than a condenser-cooled one?
Neither is better everywhere. Water-cooled engines are simple and widely known; condenser-cooled engines lose less water. Choose by your water supply.
Can I get an electric start walking tractor with a condenser-cooled engine?
Yes. On our range, all condenser-cooled models come with electric start, using a starter motor, battery and battery box.
What is the difference between a 121 and a 151 walking tractor?
Both carry 15 or 18 HP engines. The 151 is the heavy chassis for 15–25 HP, can be supplied with a rotary tiller and suits deep ploughing and paddy work; the 121 is lighter for medium jobs.
Which hand tractor plough (plow) fits the 151 chassis?
We offer a 151-specific double-share plough as well as a disc plough for the 151 chassis. Single and double share ploughs are also available for all walking tractors.
