Ridging Furrower Guide: Tractor Ditcher Sizes for Irrigation Furrows (15–90 HP)
A ridging furrower opens straight furrows and throws soil up into ridges in a single pass, ready for irrigation water or for planting on raised rows. If you dig furrows by hand or with a single-bottom plough, it is slow, the depth varies and water runs unevenly. This guide explains how our tractor models work, which size suits your tractor and how to set them up.

How a Ridging Furrower Works
The machine is a strong steel toolbar on the tractor three-point linkage. Two to four ridging bodies are clamped under the bar. Each body has a pointed share that cuts into the soil and two curved wings that push soil to both sides. The result is a V-shaped furrow in the centre with a ridge on each side.
Because the bodies are clamped, not welded, you can slide them along the bar to change the spacing between furrows. Depth is set with the tractor lift arms and top link. No PTO is needed; the tractor simply pulls the bodies through the soil.
Farmers use the same machine for three jobs:
- Irrigation furrows that carry water down the field between crop rows.
- Drainage channels that take away surplus water after heavy rain.
- Planting ridges for crops grown on raised rows.
Tractor Ditcher Models and Specifications
Our D3SH series is listed on the cultivators page as ditchers and ridging furrowers. Working widths run from 1500 to 3900 mm for 15–90 HP tractors.
| Model | Working width (mm) | Ridging spacing (mm) | Ridging height (mm) | Ridging rows | Matching power (hp) | Weight (kg) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| D3SH-2 | 1500 | 450 | 200–250 | 2 | 15–30 | 120 |
| D3SH-3 | 2500 | 700–900 | 200–250 | 2 | 25–40 | 260 |
| D3SH-4 | 3200 | 700–900 | 200–250 | 3 | 50–80 | 320 |
| D3SH-5 | 3900 | 700–900 | 200–250 | 4 | 65–90 | 400 |
All four models form ridges 200–250 mm high. The smallest model has a fixed 450 mm spacing for small tractors and narrow beds; the others adjust from 700 to 900 mm.

Matching the Furrower to Tractor HP, Soil and Crop
Start with your tractor power, then check the spacing you need:
- 15–30 HP: D3SH-2, two rows at 450 mm, for small farms and vegetable beds.
- 25–40 HP: D3SH-3, two rows with 700–900 mm spacing.
- 50–80 HP: D3SH-4, three rows across 3200 mm.
- 65–90 HP: D3SH-5, four rows across 3900 mm for large fields.
Soil changes the picture. In heavy clay or dry, hard ground, pick a model where your tractor sits at the top of its matching power range, or loosen the soil first. In light, sandy soil a tractor can pull a wider model more easily. Match the furrow spacing to your crop rows and to the tractor wheel track, so the wheels run in the furrows and do not crush the ridges.
Our selection assistant lists every model that matches your tractor horsepower.
Setup and Field Tips for Straight Irrigation Furrows

- Prepare the soil. A ridging furrower works best in loose soil. Plough first with a plough, or finish with a rotary tiller to break clods.
- Level the toolbar. Adjust the lift arms so it is level from side to side, and the top link so all bodies work at the same depth.
- Mark the first pass. Use a string line or marker poles; every later furrow follows the first one.
- Follow the slope. For irrigation, run furrows along a gentle, even slope so water flows slowly without eroding the ridges.
- Keep a steady speed. Too slow and soil is not thrown up well; too fast and ridges become uneven.
Maintenance and Spare Parts
The share points and wings wear fastest, especially in sandy or stony soil. Replace worn points before the wear reaches the body itself. Tighten clamp bolts after the first few hours, because they can loosen as the frame settles. Clean off soil after work, touch up paint and store the furrower under cover. Order spare points and a few spare bolts with the machine so you are not waiting in the middle of the season.

Common Buying Mistakes
- Wrong spacing. Buying a model whose furrow spacing does not fit your crop rows or wheel track.
- Too wide for the tractor. A four-row machine on a 40 HP tractor will struggle in clay.
- Confusing it with a disc ridger. A disc ridger uses concave discs and handles trash and hard soil better; a ridging furrower uses fixed bodies and forms sharp, clean furrows. Read our disc ridger guide or see our ridgers to compare.
- No spare points. Worn points cut shallower furrows and waste fuel.

Why Buy Direct from the Factory
We build our soil tools in our own factory in China and sell direct to dealers and farmers, with SH labelling, OEM options and export packing. We ship by sea, rail and air – see export & shipping.
Good water management is central to sustainable farming. The FAO’s work on sustainable agricultural mechanization shows how the right implements help farmers use land and water better.

FAQ
What is the difference between a ridging furrower and a ridging plough (plow)?
They are closely related. Both use double-winged bodies to throw soil both ways. A furrower usually carries several bodies on a toolbar to make many furrows at once.
How deep and high are the ridges from a tractor ditcher?
Our D3SH models form ridges 200–250 mm high. Actual furrow depth depends on your soil and depth setting.
What size 3 point furrower do I need for a 30 HP tractor?
The D3SH-2 is made for 15–30 HP, and the D3SH-3 for 25–40 HP if you need 700–900 mm spacing.
Can I change the spacing between furrow openers?
Yes, on the D3SH-3, D3SH-4 and D3SH-5 the bodies adjust from 700 to 900 mm. The D3SH-2 has 450 mm spacing.
