Tractor Horsepower Guide: How to Choose the Right HP from 20 to 200 HP
Choosing the right tractor horsepower is the most important decision when you buy a farm tractor. Too little power and the tractor struggles with ploughs and heavy trailers; too much and you pay for fuel, weight and capital you never use. This guide explains the five tractor horsepower ranges we build, from 20 hp compact models to 200 hp tractors with air-conditioned cabs, and shows how to match power to farm size, soil type and implements.

Why Tractor Horsepower Matters
Engine power decides which implements a tractor can pull, how wide they can be, and how many hectares you can cover in a day. Heavy soil, deep ploughing and hilly land all need more power per metre of working width. Light work such as spraying, mowing and transport needs much less. When you compare tractor horsepower, look at three things together: engine power, PTO speed and the hydraulic lift capacity, because a tractor that has enough engine power but a weak linkage still cannot carry a large mounted plough.

The 5 Tractor Horsepower Ranges Compared
All Shenghang tractors are four-wheel drive (4WD) with a standard three-point linkage and PTO. Full specifications are on our 4WD tractors page.
- 20–40 hp (SH-204): TY8F+2R gearbox, single clutch, 540/1000 rpm PTO, tyres 6.00-16 / 9.5-24, about 1300 kg. For orchards, greenhouses, vegetable farms and smallholdings.
- 50–70 hp (SH-504): TE8F+8R gearbox, ROPS canopy, forced hydraulics with 2-group valve, tyres 7.5-16 / 11.2-28, about 1700 kg. The most popular all-round size for family farms.
- 80–90 hp (SH-804): TB12F+12R gearbox, ROPS canopy, tyres 9.5-24 / 14.9-30, about 3000 kg. For medium farms, contractors and heavier ploughing.
- 100–150 hp (SH-1004): TDF16+8 gearbox, heated cab, 3-group valve, 760/850 rpm PTO, tyres 12.4-24 / 16.9-34, about 5000 kg. For large fields and wide implements.
- 160–200 hp (SH-1604): TC24+8 gearbox, air-conditioned cab, 8-spline PTO, tyres 14.9-26 / 18.4-38, about 7000 kg. For big farms, deep tillage and reversible ploughs.
How to Match Tractor Horsepower to Farm Size
A simple starting point is the area you need to work in each season and how many days you have to finish it:
- Under 5 ha: 20–40 hp is usually enough for tilling, spraying and transport. For very small plots, a walking tractor is an even lower-cost option.
- 5–30 ha: 50–70 hp handles a 3-disc plough, a 4-row corn planter and a farm trailer.
- 30–100 ha: 80–90 hp or 100–150 hp lets you pull wider harrows and seeders and finish planting on time.
- Over 100 ha: 160–200 hp with a cab gives the output and operator comfort needed for long working days.
Heavy clay, stony ground and hilly land move you up one range. Light sandy soil and flat fields can move you down one range.

Matching Implements to Tractor Horsepower
The implement list is often the real decider. These pairings come from the matching-power data of our own implements:
- Disc ploughs: 2–3 discs for 25–40 hp, 4 discs for about 80 hp, 5–6 heavy discs for 100–120 hp and above. See our ploughs.
- Hydraulic reversible ploughs: 6–10 shares need 120–240 hp.
- Corn planters: 2-row from 12 hp, 4-row from 24–50 hp, 6-row up to 80 hp. See our seeders.
- Wheat seeders: 6–12 rows for 12–25 hp, 24 rows for 70–90 hp.
- Square balers: the 9YF-1750 suits 50–100 hp tractors.
- Harrows and rotary tillers: width rises with power; check our harrows and rotary tillers.
As a rule, buy the tractor for the heaviest job you do every year, not for the occasional one. You can always use a smaller tractor for light work, but an underpowered tractor on a heavy plough wears out its clutch and gearbox quickly.
4WD, Cab and PTO: What Else to Check
Four-wheel drive gives better traction in wet, soft and uneven fields, so you can use more of the available power. A ROPS canopy is enough in warm, dry climates; a heated or air-conditioned cab is worth it for long days, dust and extreme temperatures. Check the PTO speed your implements need: 540/1000 rpm on the 20–90 hp range and 760/850 rpm on the 100–200 hp range. Ask for the tyre size and counterweights that suit your soil.
Engine power figures are only comparable when they are measured the same way. Many importers refer to the OECD tractor test codes, which define standard procedures for measuring PTO power, drawbar pull and hydraulic lift.

Common Mistakes When Choosing Tractor Horsepower
- Buying on engine power alone without checking hydraulic lift and weight.
- Ignoring local service: choose a model with parts you can stock and mechanics can repair.
- Forgetting the trailer: a loaded trailer on hills needs more power and braking than flat-field work.
- Choosing a cab tractor for a hot region without air-conditioning.

Tractor Horsepower FAQ
Is a 50 hp tractor enough for a 20 ha farm?
Usually yes for mixed crops on medium soil. A 50–70 hp 4WD tractor handles a 3-disc plough, a 4-row planter and a farm trailer.
What tractor horsepower do I need for a disc plough?
Plan on about 10–20 hp per disc, depending on disc size and soil. A 3-disc plough suits 50–70 hp; a 5-disc plough needs 100 hp or more.
Can you supply tractors with implements in one container?
Yes. A tractor can be shipped together with a plough, harrow or planter in one container. See export and shipping for packing details.
Is a 4WD tractor worth it compared with 2WD?
A 4WD tractor puts more of its engine power on the ground in wet, soft, sandy or hilly fields, so it pulls a plough or trailer with less wheel slip. Every SH model from 20 to 200 hp is a 4WD tractor with a three-point linkage and PTO.
What can a 50 hp tractor do?
A 50 hp tractor such as our SH-504 (50–70 hp) handles a 3-disc plough, a 4-row corn planter, a disc harrow of matching width and a farm trailer. For many family farms of 5–30 ha, a 50 hp tractor is the most practical all-round size.
When do I need a 100 hp tractor?
Choose a 100 hp tractor such as the SH-1004 (100–150 hp, heated cab, 760/850 rpm PTO) when you farm more than about 30 ha, pull a 5-disc plough or a 2.5–3.0 m heavy disc harrow, or need a cab for long working days. A 100 hp tractor also gives spare power for hilly ground.
What should I check when buying a farm tractor from China?
Compare engine power, gearbox, PTO speed, hydraulic valves, tyre sizes, cab or canopy, and local parts supply. Every SH farm tractor is supplied direct from the factory with SH labelling, OEM options, export packing and shipping support. Ask us on WhatsApp for a spec sheet.
