Vegetable Seeder Guide: 10-Row vs 12-Row Tractor Models
A vegetable seeder lets one tractor driver sow carrots, onions, rape, sesame and other small seeds in straight, evenly spaced rows at a fixed shallow depth. Hand sowing such tiny seeds is slow and uneven, and broadcasting wastes seed and makes weeding difficult. This guide explains how a tractor-mounted vegetable seeder works, how to choose between the 10-row and 12-row SH models, and how to get an even stand in the field.
What Is a Tractor Vegetable Seeder?
The SH 2SH multi-function vegetable seeder is a three-point mounted precision drill built for small vegetable and crop seeds. A row of individual seed meters sits along a steel frame. A ground wheel drives the meters through a chain, so seeding rate stays tied to forward speed. Behind each opener, the seed drops into a narrow furrow and a full-width roller presses the soil back down to give good seed-to-soil contact.
Because each row has its own small hopper and metering unit, you can sow in narrow, uniform rows of 150 mm – close enough for a dense carrot or onion bed, yet in lines that a hoe or a row cultivator can follow later.

Which Crops Can a Vegetable Seeder Plant?
Both SH models are listed for rape, carrot, sesame, alfalfa, onion, tomato, hot pepper, flowering cabbage and millet. In practice that covers most small, round or pelleted seeds sown directly in the field. Large seeds such as corn, soybean or potatoes need a different metering system – see our seeders page for corn, soybean-corn and potato planters.
10-Row vs 12-Row: Specifications
| Model | Rows | Row spacing | Seeding depth | Tractor power | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| V2SH-10 | 10 | 150 mm | Adjustable 5–30 mm | 25–50 hp | 260 kg |
| V2SH-12 | 12 | 150 mm | Adjustable 5–30 mm | 50–70 hp | 290 kg |
Overall size is 1900 × 1350 × 880 mm for the 10-row model and 2100 × 1350 × 880 mm for the 12-row model. Both work at 5–7 km/h and hitch to a standard three-point linkage.
How to choose
- Tractor of 25–50 hp: choose the V2SH-10. It is lighter, easier to lift and suits small farms and market gardens.
- Tractor of 50–70 hp: the V2SH-12 covers more ground per pass and keeps a larger tractor working efficiently.
- Bed width: match the number of rows to your bed system so the tractor wheels always run in the same tracks.

Prepare a Fine Seedbed First
A precision seeder can only place seed accurately if the soil is fine, level and firm. Clods lift the openers and leave seed on the surface; deep loose soil lets seed sink too far. Most growers make one pass with a rotary tiller after ploughing or disc harrowing, then sow the same day while the soil is still moist. On heavy ground, a correctly set rotary tiller with the rear shield down gives the level surface small seeds need.
Calibrate Before You Sow
- Set depth: start shallow. Very small seeds such as carrot and onion usually need only 5–15 mm; larger seeds can go deeper within the 5–30 mm range.
- Check each meter: lift the seeder, turn the ground wheel a set number of turns and collect seed from every row. All rows should deliver about the same amount.
- Keep speed steady: drive within 5–7 km/h. Faster driving makes seed bounce in the furrow.
- Watch the hoppers: refill before any hopper runs low, and keep seed free of chaff and stones that block the meters.

Why Mechanised Sowing Pays Off
Straight rows and even spacing make every later job easier: thinning, weeding, spraying and harvesting. Uniform depth also gives more even emergence, so the crop matures together. The FAO’s work on sustainable agricultural mechanization highlights how the right-sized machine helps small and medium farms save labour and plant on time.

FAQ
What tractor do I need for a vegetable seeder?
A 25–50 hp tractor with a three-point linkage handles the 10-row V2SH-10; the 12-row V2SH-12 needs 50–70 hp.
Can I change the row spacing?
The standard row spacing is 150 mm. Tell us your crop and bed layout before ordering and we will confirm the best configuration.
How deep does it sow?
Seeding depth is adjustable from 5 to 30 mm, which suits most small vegetable seeds.
Can it sow tomato and pepper directly?
Yes, tomato and hot pepper are on the suitable crop list, together with rape, carrot, sesame, alfalfa, onion, flowering cabbage and millet.
