2 Wheel vs 4 Wheel Trailer: 5 Differences That Decide Load, Safety and Price

2026年10月18日20 views

Choosing between a two wheel trailer and a four wheel trailer looks simple, but it decides how much you can carry, how safely you can brake on a slope and how much you pay. This 2 wheel vs 4 wheel trailer comparison walks through the five differences that matter most on the farm, with real load and tractor HP figures from our range, so you can pick the right tractor trailer the first time.

1. Load Capacity

Our T7SH and HT7SH models carry 1,500 or 2,000 kg. The F7SH and HF7SH series start at 3,000 kg and go up to 12,000 kg, with eight tyres on the 10 and 12 tonne versions. If your heaviest regular load is a full harvest of grain, sugarcane or bricks above 2 tonnes, choose the larger series.

2. Tractor Power and Drawbar Weight

On a single-axle trailer, part of the load sits on the tractor drawbar. That helps traction on small 12–25 HP tractors, because the extra weight presses the rear tyres into the ground. But it also means the front of a light tractor can lift on a steep climb if the trailer is loaded too far back.

A model with four wheels has a turntable or steering front axle that carries its own load, so the drawbar carries very little weight. The tractor must still have the power and weight to pull and stop it: 30–40 HP for 3 tonnes, 40–60 HP for 4–5 tonnes and 50–100 HP for 6–12 tonnes. Our tractor horsepower guide explains how to match HP to the job.

3. Stability and Braking

With four wheels on the ground, a loaded trailer stands level on its own and is more stable on rough tracks. On a single-axle model, balance depends on how you load it: put slightly more weight in front of the axle, keep the centre of gravity low and secure the load.

Brakes matter more as the load grows. Our two-wheel models use impact or air brakes; the four-wheel models use manual brakes on the basic versions and air brakes on the hydraulic tipping versions. For public roads and hilly ground, choose air brakes and check local rules for lights and reflectors.

4. Manoeuvring, Reversing and Field Work

A single-axle model follows the tractor closely, turns tightly in yards and greenhouses and is much easier to reverse into a barn or up to a loading bay. A trailer with four wheels needs more space to turn and takes practice to reverse, because the front axle steers in the opposite direction. On narrow farm tracks and small fields, many farmers prefer two wheels; on long road runs to a market or mill, four wheels are calmer and safer.

5. Unloading: Manual or Tipping Trailer

Both types are available as a manual unloading trailer or a hydraulic tipping trailer. A tipping trailer uses the tractor hydraulics and a ram to lift the body, so sand, gravel, manure or grain slides out in seconds. Manual versions are lighter and cheaper and suit bagged or boxed goods.

Model Wheels Load (kg) Unloading Brake Matching power (hp)
T7SH-2 2 2000 Manual Impact / air 12–25
HT7SH-2 2 2000 Hydraulic dump (back) Impact / air 12–25
HF7SH-3 4 3000 Hydraulic dump (back) Air 30–40
HF7SH-5 4 5000 Hydraulic dump Air 40–60
HF7SH-8 4 8000 Hydraulic dump Air 60–100

Which Should You Buy?

  • Choose a two wheel trailer if your tractor is 12–25 HP, loads are under 2 tonnes, you work in tight yards or small fields and you want the lowest price.
  • Choose a four wheel trailer if your tractor is 30 HP or more, loads are 3 tonnes or more, you drive long distances on roads or you carry grain at harvest.
  • Choose a tipping trailer in either size if you move loose material every week.

Many farms start with a walking tractor and a small trailer, then move up to a bigger trailer with a bigger tractor. See our walking tractor attachments for the smallest sizes.

Safe Loading Tips for Any Tractor Trailer

  • Never exceed the rated load or the tyre rating.
  • Spread the load evenly and keep it low.
  • Strap or net loose loads.
  • Check tyre pressure, wheel nuts, lights and brakes before every trip.
  • Grease hinges, ram pivots and wheel bearings regularly, and wash the body after carrying fertilizer or manure.

Transport is one of the biggest jobs on any farm. The FAO’s work on sustainable agricultural mechanization shows how the right equipment saves labour after harvest.

FAQ

Is a two wheel trailer or four wheel trailer safer?

For loads over 2 tonnes and road use, a larger model with air brakes is safer. For light loads in tight spaces, a well-loaded single-axle model is safe and easier to handle.

Can a 25 HP tractor pull a four wheel trailer?

Our smallest four wheel model, 3 tonnes, is matched to 30–40 HP. For 25 HP, a 1.5–2 t two wheel trailer is the better match.

What is the difference between a dump trailer and a tipping trailer?

They are the same thing: a hydraulic ram lifts the body to unload. “Tipping trailer” is more common in the UK, Africa and Asia; “dump trailer” in North America.

Do you make trailers for walking tractors?

Yes, with rated loads of 500, 1,000 and 1,500 kg for 12–20 HP walking tractors.
