Hydraulic Dump Trailer Guide: Sizes from 1.5 to 12 Tons and How to Choose

2026年10月15日28 views

A hydraulic dump trailer lets one tractor driver unload grain, sand, manure or harvested crops in seconds instead of spending an hour shovelling. The challenge for buyers is choosing the right load, axle layout and brakes for their tractor – a trailer that is too heavy is unsafe, and one that is too small wastes trips.

How a Hydraulic Dump Trailer Works

A tipping trailer has a hinged body mounted on a fixed chassis. A hydraulic cylinder (ram) under the body is connected by hoses to the tractor’s hydraulic outlet. When the driver opens the valve, oil pushes the ram out and the body tilts backwards; the tailgate swings open and the load slides out. Closing the valve lets the body settle back down onto the chassis.

Because the tractor provides the oil pressure, check that your tractor has a working remote hydraulic outlet before choosing a hydraulic version. A manual tipping trailer is simpler and costs less, and is fine for light loads that are unloaded by hand, as explained in our farm trailer buying guide.

Hydraulic Dump Trailer Sizes: SH Models

The table lists the hydraulic dump versions in our 7SH range. These farm dump trailer sizes run from 1.5 to 12 t, and each one also has a manual-unloading twin with a lower dead weight. Full details are on our tractor trailers page.

We also make hot-dip galvanized hydraulic tandem trailers (GH2SH series, 2000–3000 kg) with a hydraulic ram, tool-box remote control and battery, so they can tip without a tractor hydraulic outlet. Specifications are for reference; customisation is available.

How to Choose a Hydraulic Tipping Trailer for Your Tractor

Start with tractor power. A hydraulic tipping trailer that is heavier than the tractor can control is dangerous, especially downhill. Use the matching power column as your limit, not a target to exceed. As a rule from our range: 1.5–2 t two-wheel trailers suit 12–25 hp, 3–5 t four-wheel trailers suit about 30–60 hp, and 6–12 t trailers need 50–100 hp.

Then think about the load. Estimate your heaviest typical load – a full harvest of maize cobs, a load of wet sand or manure – and add a margin. Never run above the rated load. Light, bulky crops such as hay fill the body before reaching the weight limit, so a longer carriage helps; heavy materials such as sand reach the weight limit with the body only part full.

Two wheels or four? A two-wheel tractor tipping trailer puts part of the weight on the tractor drawbar, turns tightly and suits small farms. A four-wheel trailer carries its own weight, is more stable on rough tracks and is the choice from 3 t upwards.

Brakes and roads. For loaded trips on public roads or hills, choose air brakes; slow field work with lighter loads can use manual or impact brakes.

Safe Tipping and Field Tips

  • Always tip on firm, level ground. Tipping on a slope or soft soil is a common cause of trailers falling over.
  • Spread the load evenly and keep heavy items low and near the axle centre.
  • Open the tailgate catch before raising the body, and keep people away from the rear.
  • Lower the body fully before driving off; never travel with the body raised.
  • Connect the brake line and lights before road trips, and check tyre pressure when fully loaded.

Maintenance and Spare Parts

A hydraulic dump trailer is simple, but a few checks keep it working for many seasons:

  • Inspect hydraulic hoses and fittings for leaks or rubbing, and keep the ram rod clean.
  • Grease the body hinge pins, drawbar pivot and wheel hubs regularly.
  • Check leaf spring U-bolts, wheel nuts and brake adjustment after the first loaded trips.
  • Wash off fertilizer and manure, which speed up rust, and touch up chipped paint.

Dealers often stock spare tyres, brake parts and hydraulic seals so customers can get a quick repair at harvest time.

Common Buying Mistakes

  • Buying the biggest trailer the budget allows without checking tractor power and brakes.
  • Choosing hydraulic tipping when the tractor has no remote hydraulic outlet (or not choosing a self-contained galvanized model instead).
  • Ignoring tyre size and ground pressure for soft fields.
  • Forgetting the hitch type and drawbar height of your tractor.

Why Buy Direct from a Dump Trailer Manufacturer in China

As a dump trailer manufacturer, Shenghang builds trailers from 0.5 to 12 tonnes in our own factory and sells factory direct, with SH labelling, OEM options for dealers and export packing. Trailers are packed to make good use of container space, and we ship by sea, rail or air – see export and shipping. Need power for the trailer? Our 4WD tractors run from 20 to 200 hp, and small farms can pair a walking tractor with a 0.5–1.5 t trailer.

Hydraulic Dump Trailer FAQ

What size farm dump trailer for a 50 hp tractor?

In our range, the HF7SH-4 (4000 kg, 40–55 hp) and HF7SH-5 (5000 kg, 40–60 hp) match a 50 hp tractor. Choose the smaller one for hilly or soft ground.

Does a hydraulic tipping trailer need the tractor’s hydraulics?

The 7SH hydraulic models use oil from the tractor’s remote outlet. Our galvanized GH2SH tandem trailers have their own ram, remote control and battery.

What is the difference between a tipping trailer and a dump trailer?

They are the same thing: a trailer whose body tilts to unload. “Tipping trailer” is common in the UK, Africa and Asia; “dump trailer” is common in the US.

Can I order a tractor tipping trailer with my own brand?

Yes. As the factory we offer OEM options and SH labelling for dealers.
