Galvanized Farm Trailer: 11 Models from 650 to 3,000 kg and Why Zinc Outlasts Paint

2026年10月18日21 views

A galvanized trailer keeps working long after a painted one has started to rust at every weld, hinge and stone chip. If you carry fertilizer, livestock feed, garden waste or tools in a humid or coastal climate, a galvanized farm trailer is often the cheaper choice over its working life. This guide explains why hot-dip zinc protects better than paint and compares our 11 models, from 650 kg single-axle cage trailers to 3,000 kg tipping tandems.

What Is a Hot-Dip Galvanized Trailer?

A hot-dip galvanized trailer is built from steel that has been cleaned and dipped in a bath of molten zinc after fabrication. The zinc reacts with the steel and forms a tough, bonded coating inside and outside every tube, weld and corner, including places a paint gun cannot reach.

That coating protects the steel in two ways. First, it is a barrier between the steel and water. Second, zinc corrodes in preference to steel, so even where the coating is scratched, the surrounding zinc keeps protecting the bare metal. Paint only provides a barrier: once it chips, rust starts underneath and spreads.

Galvanized Farm Trailer vs Painted Trailer

Point Hot-dip galvanized Painted
Coverage Inside tubes, welds and edges Outer surfaces only
Scratches and stone chips Zinc still protects the bare steel Rust starts at the chip
Fertilizer, salt and manure Good resistance; wash after use Paint breaks down quickly
Maintenance Washing, grease bearings and hinges Regular touch-up painting
Purchase price Higher Lower
Resale value Holds value well Drops as rust appears

For a heavy tipping trailer used mainly in dry fields, a painted body is fine. For light utility work, coastal farms, livestock and fertilizer, a galvanized farm trailer pays back its higher price.

11 Galvanized Trailer Models Compared

All our galvanized models are listed on the trailers page. They share folding sides with a 600 mm slot-in cage, 165R14 tyres and LED lights.

Single-axle cage trailer models (650–1,400 kg)

Model Carriage L×W (mm) Load (kg) Axle (mm) Brake
G1SH-6×4 1830×1220 650 Ø40 —
G1SH-7×4 2130×1220 750 Ø40 —
G1SH-7×5 2130×1520 750 Ø40 —
G1SH-8×5 2440×1520 750 40×40 Optional
G1SH-8×5-1400 2440×1520 1400 45×45 Disc brake

Single-axle models have a 2 mm chequer-plate floor, 300 mm folding sides and a 50 mm hitch. They suit garden centres, small farms, landscapers and anyone towing behind a pickup or small tractor.

Tandem axle trailer models (2,000–3,000 kg)

Model Carriage L×W (mm) Load (kg) Axles Brake Hydraulic ram (kg)
G2SH-8×5 2440×1520 2000 2 × 45×45 Disc brake —
G2SH-10×5 3050×1520 2800 2 × 50×50 Disc brake —
G2SH-10×6 3050×1830 3000 2 × 50×50 Disc brake —
GH2SH-8×5 2440×1520 2000 2 × 50×50 Disc brake 3000
GH2SH-10×5 3050×1520 2800 2 × 50×50 Disc brake 5000
GH2SH-10×6 3050×1830 3000 2 × 50×50 Disc brake 5000

A tandem axle trailer spreads the load over four wheels, so it is more stable and easier on soft ground. The G2SH models have a 2.5 mm chequer-plate floor and 300–400 mm sides. The GH2SH tipping versions add a hydraulic ram with a tool-box remote control and battery, so you can tip sand, soil or feed without a tractor hydraulic outlet.

How to Choose a Cage Trailer or Tandem

  • Load: estimate your heaviest typical load and add a margin. Never exceed the rated load.
  • Towing vehicle: check the towing capacity and hitch size of your tractor, pickup or utility vehicle.
  • Cargo: the 600 mm cage holds bulky light loads such as hay, leaves and small animals; fold the sides down for pallets and machinery.
  • Unloading: choose a hydraulic tipping model if you move loose material every day.
  • Brakes and lights: heavier models have disc brakes. Tell us your local road rules for lights, reflectors and brakes before ordering.

For bigger loads behind a farm tractor, see our painted hydraulic dump trailer guide or the general farm trailer buying guide.

Caring for a Galvanized Trailer

Zinc needs little care, but a few habits keep it working for many years. Rinse the body with clean water after carrying fertilizer, salt or manure. Grease the wheel bearings, hinge pins and tipping ram pivots. Check tyre pressure, wheel nuts, lights and the coupling before every trip. White powder on new zinc is normal in wet weather and does not mean the coating has failed.

The American Galvanizers Association explains how the coating works in more detail on its page about hot-dip galvanizing.

FAQ

How long does a hot-dip galvanized trailer last?

With basic washing and greasing, the zinc coating protects the steel for many years, far longer than paint in the same conditions. Life depends on climate and what you carry.

Can a galvanized trailer be painted?

Yes, with a suitable primer for zinc, but most buyers keep the natural silver finish.

What is the difference between the G2SH and GH2SH tandem axle trailer?

Both carry 2,000–3,000 kg. The GH2SH adds a hydraulic tipping ram with remote control and battery.

Is the cage removable?

Yes, the 600 mm cage slots into the sides and lifts off when you need a flat deck.
